In March of 2022, The American Psychiatric Association added the diagnosis Prolonged Grief Disorder into the DSM V TR. While the interaction between complicated grief and substance misuse has long been discussed among treating professionals, the formal addition of PGD into the DSM V TR now provides specific diagnostic criteria.
