Signs and Symptoms of Sex and Love Addiction – and the Link Between Relationships and Relapse
Prompted by books like Fifty Shades of Grey, and dating apps, sex and love addiction is at an all-time high, and people in early recovery are particularly vulnerable. Falling out of love with substances or other addictions is the perfect setup for refilling the void with love and romance. Aside from cravings for love, there is a quest for the best sex through non-conventional means — by any means. Casual sex, hookups, affairs, pornography, bondage/discipline, and sado-masochism — the more risqué the better —have led to highly addictive sex. It is in the patient’s best interest to address any signs and symptoms of sex and love addiction in early recovery. These individuals are emotionally fragile and are rarely able to regulate emotional upheaval and withdrawal when triggered by a turbulent relationship or a Breakup. Sex and love addiction, like any other addiction, happens when a person loses their power to choose. They reengage in a relationship or a sexual behavior that continues despite negative consequences. When a sexual behavior results in negative consequences to oneself or others, and the person can’t stop, they have crossed the line from “Choosing” to “Powerless.” When we teach patients how to love themselves first, and the characteristics of a healthy relationship (with self and others), we decrease their chances of relapse and provide them with the best chances of finding authentic love and intimacy.
