In the United States, the most common ways of helping clients with Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) are single issue focused interventions. Research indicates that these methods and efforts to help people with SUDs have low completion rates, difficulties engaging and retaining long term participants, and a serious gap in services for those with concurrent mental health issues. Based on research and clinical expertise, there is a practical solution to addressing this vast gap in services and the consequences this population endures as a result: integrated treatment. Integrated treatment is designed to address at least two or more issues, often with a set of multiple disciplinary services and practitioners who are adept at providing specific interventions. Cognitive Behavioral Therapies are the most researched and efficacious forms of psychotherapy for the most common presenting mental health issues.
